DICE has confirmed Battlefield 4 will launch with seven game modes, five are returning ones and two are brand new to the series. On the official blog, the company detailed what they would be.

Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Domination are all returning modes. The two new ones are Obliteration and Defuse. In Obliteration, two teams will face off on a medium-sized battleground where a bomb spawns in the middle and players have to carry it to one of three enemy military installations. Defuse is where players don’t have any re-spawns for a quick paced infantry-only match.

DICE also confirmed that it will launch with 10 multiplayer maps and all game modes will be playable on all of them.

Battlefield 4 will be available on PS3 and all current generation platforms on October 29th in North America and November 1st in Europe. It will also be a launch title for the PS4.

Square-Enix has released a new trailer for the upcoming Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It’s called ‘The Savior’s Choice’ and has some vague allusions to key story points in the game. We get to see the last village of the Moogles and a threat that is on the brink of wiping them out. There’s also Chocobo action and something that has taken Sazh’s son’s soul.

All of this done with their gloriously high rendered visuals that give everyone that wonderful feathered hair no matter what the circumstances.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will come out on February 11th in North America and February 14th in Europe for the PS3 and other current generation consoles.

Lightning Return: Final Fantasy XIII was shown off at Gamescom last week. Square Enix released a trailer and now direct camera footage of the game being played has appeared online.

In it we see Lightning running around a town before going out into the wilds where she meets some sort of monkey/cheetah creature and fights it. The battle system has a camera lock and later it looks like you’ll be able to avoid battles by running by random enemy spawns, so you’ll only fight when you want to.

Be warned the video is loud because it was recorded in the conference hall.

We found the clip via VG247, who found it via AGB, but we don’t know who originally took the footage.

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida told Polygon this week in an interview that Sony will be creating a supply of new titles at a “good pace” not only during the PlayStation 4’s launch, but afterwards as well.

“It’s interesting that when we discuss the lineup and launch timing of titles, we always discuss internally with out marketing teams about stratefy, about whe we want these games. It’s not like we’re saying we have to release everything at lauch or we shouldn’t release everything at launch. They’re also going back and forth; they want to create a larger launch lineup, but at the same time, they want to create a supply of new tittles with a good pace. That’s a competing goal.

“I think , because we have good support from third parties, I think we should focus more on the steady flow of titles from our studios, rather than trying to get everything for the launch.

”The teams really want to wait until they have something that people will se e any say ‘Wow.’ It’s a natural desire for game development teams to wait until later in the development to unveil their titles. I agree, if we talk about some new Naughty Dog game that’s coming, and show some teaser movie or something, people might like it – but that might not be the best presentation for he game they’re actually developing for PS4.
“It’s luxury for us not to announce these games we have in development , that we do not feel the need to do that to support the launch of PS4.”

It’s actually a good idea. One of the biggest hurdles a platform will have to overcome is the assumption that there aren’t any games on it regardless if it is true or not. Sony’s own PSP was a victim of this idea. It turns out it isn’t about absolute numbers of how many games a platform has, but the view is created via how much continued support a platform gets.

Better to not release everything at once so you’ll have a steady stream on content and never let the assumption gain a foothold.

Many fans have been eagerly waiting for a follow up for 2008’s Mirror’s Edge, but it has taken a long time for us to hear anything about it. DICE executive producer Patrick Bach says it was because DICE felt there never had a strong enough pitch to bring to EA.

In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Bach says DICE didn’t pitch the rebbot until they were happy with it. They wanted to get it right and they were their hardest critics in developing the new Mirror’s Edge game.

Regarding EA and it’s treatment of IPs like Mirror’s Edge, Bach said, “…in general, EA is very positive about us, like [asking us], ‘What do you want?’, instead of someone telling you, ‘Build this, do that’.”

Mirror’s Edge is slated for PS4 and other next-gen consoles, “when it’s ready.”

Square Enix has announced that the Tomb Raider reboot released earlier this year have sold 4 million copies worldwide since its launch. Their tone seems to have changed a little from earlier this year given the company’s stated disappointment on the game selling 3.4 million copies in under a month.

Square Enix’s North American and European studio boss Darrell Gallagher wrote a blog post on Gamasutra. There he also revealed that Sleeping Dogs, released in August of last year has managed to be profitable. Originally it too was released to what were underwhelming sales for the company and pretty great numbers to everyone else.

What is big for Sleeping Dogs is that it managed to maintain a user base of 500,000 players a month. The three-year old Just Cause 2 seems to be pulling in similar numbers. From here Gallagher says they want build their games “beyond a traditional beginning, middle and end.” They are going to make their games more persistent to keep players coming back for years instead of weeks, but he also notes he isn’t talking about MMOs, just persistent online experiences.

Tomb Raider’s sequel is currently “well into development” for next-generation consoles.

Konami has released a new Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 trailer to show off the how the game plays. We get to see the depths of its strategic combat system and various weapons and abilities available to you as Dracula in the 8-minute trailer.

The game’s world looks to be a little more open that in the previous game. And in the good old Castlevania style, there are items that can be gained through the game that allows you to get to previously inaccessible areas. We get to see two fights, one against a stone golem and one against a skeleton knight thing. Alongside are a few cutscenes in between giving a vague idea what the next game will be about.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will launch February 27th next year for the PlayStation 3 and current gen platforms.
