Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito spoke to Eurogamer with the news. It is believed that the PS4 has a $60 loss built in – a lot lower than the sale loss of the PS3 at launch – though he this denied specifically because they think most gamers will also get a PlayStation Plus subscription and a launch title. A launch title would have been given in previous generations, but with consoles now being media centers as well, it is not a guarantee though likely. And of course to play multiplayer games one would need a PlayStation Plus subscription giving added incentive to sign up.

Ito would not comment on whether they would need to sell more than one launch game in order to make a profit. But even if players only buy the console it is easy to see that Sony will make up the difference much faster than they did with the PS3.

We see clips of Destiny, Watch Dogs, Killzone Shadow Fall, DriveClub, and many more. The trailer also reminds viewers of all the perks being a PlayStation Plus member comes with like online play, discounted games, free games, early access and more all for €49.99 a year or €6.99 a month.

PS4 launches on November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe with a free 14-day trial PS Plus subscription.

Warframe

Warframe is a cooperative third-person shooter video game, developed by Digital Extremes. Players control a member of the Tenno, ancient warriors who have awoken from centuries of cryosleep to find themselves in a war with the Grineer, a race of militarized humans, and the Corpus. The Tenno use advanced armor with unique properties, called Warframes in the war against the Grineer and Corpus.

In Warframe, up to 4 players work together to complete missions such as eliminating enemies or retrieving data from terminals. Players can carry a primary weapon (such as a rifle or shotgun), a secondary weapon (usually a pistol), and a melee weapon. Players are given XP (experience points) for killing enemies and completing missions, which allows them to level up their weapons and armor. Each Warframe has 4 different abilities that can be unlocked through the progression system. When equipment is leveled up, it will unlock mod slots, which can improve or add various stats of weapons and armor, as well as general stat bonuses.

Blacklight: Retribution

Blacklight: Retribution is a first-person shooter video game by Zombie Inc. Retribution is the sequel to Blacklight: Tango Down.

Blacklight: Retribution takes place in a science fiction setting and possesses a number of game types and maps. The game currently appears to have no single player other than training and practice mode, pitting players against AI or “bot” enemies. The game types are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination (a ticket type of game), King of the Hill (objective capture), and Kill Confirmed (similar to Team Deathmatch except players collect tokens from their dead opponents and teammates for extra Combat Points). Siege Mode, where one team advances a Scorpion Tank through checkpoints into enemy territory, was added in August 2012. In March 2013, the Onslaught mode was added, in which players collect tokens to gain XP and GP.

Planetside 2

Across the continents of Auraxis, thousands of players will come together in enormous battles to win control of territory and resources for their empire in PlanetSide 2. This sequel takes all the groundbreaking features from the original massive multiplayer battles, distinctive empires to rally around, and enormous continents to support intense ground and air combat and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect out of the FPS and MMO genres.

DC Universe Online

The first project out of Sony Online’s Austin studio, this action-based MMO explores the various worlds of DC Comics’ superheroes and villains. Key collaborators include comic veterans Jim Lee (who serves as the game’s Executive Creative Director), Ale Garza, Carlos D’Anda, and Scott Iwahashi, in addition to EverQuest developers, Chris Cao and Shawn Lord.

A massively-multiplayer experience, DC Universe Online brings high-energy action to the forefront with a combat system designed to deliver a fast-paced action experience with the extraordinary powers of your personally created heroes and villains at your disposal. Battle with or against their favorite DC Super Heroes and Villains including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker. For the very first time, players and fans will be able to enter this fabled world as an active force for good or evil.

War Thunder

Outlast

Driveclub is a next-generation driving game from Evolution Studios featuring team-based racing.

Don’t Starve

Don’t Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic. You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home.

Secret Ponchos

Secret Ponchos is the first offering from Switchblade Monkeys. It is an online Western top-down shooter that will make it’s debut on the PS4.

Sony focused a lot on the PS4 at E3 2013, but they also revealed a special package for GTA V fans in the form of a PS3 bundle.

The bundle is set to debut in retail stores on September 17th for $299.

What’s more, to complete the experience, Sony is also going to deploy a GTA V Pulse – Elite Edition headset that’s customized with colors and logos from the open world game. The device will be on sale in GameStop stores across North America according to PS blog.

The best part of this all, is that you can play all those games for free for 15 days, thanks to a PS Plus free trial membership currently offered by Sony Japan. If you don’t know any Japanese the process may be slightly tricky, but DualShockers has given some help.

You need to create a Japanese PSN (Sony Entertainment Network) account first. The Japanese PSN often gives access to a lot of interesting stuff. There are many good guides online to do so. Kotaku has a very good one here.

Once you have your new Japanese PSN account, you can move on to grabbing the PS Plus promotion. First of all go here, and follow the instructions in the pictures below.

Congratulations! Now you’re a member of the Japanese PS Plus for fifteen days. Remember, as long as you are a member, you can re-download every single game you ever downloaded, even if you deleted it from your hard disk.

Now, you can find the games you want and download them.

That’s it. As long as the games are on your hard disk (and your membership is active) you can play them even when you’re logged on your North American or European accounts.

At the onset, it was made clear that multiplayer on PS3 and PS Vita will continue to remain free of cost. He then proceeded to explain the need of a subscription model for the PS4.

He said, “We’re focusing on new services and online, like the ‘Share’ button I previously mentioned and the ability to play using mobile devices with the cloud feature. Our plan is to continue to invest in the future, but investing like this is not compatible with our previous policy that  involved reducing costs by every mean to keep the service free.”

Apologizing for the additional cost to be incurred by customers, he said, “I apologize for the financial burden on our users, but on PS4 it’ll also provide early access to beta versions, free games and discounts like on PS3 and PS Vita. In addition to that PS Plus members will receive for free a special edition with slightly reduced functions of DriveClub.”

He also revealed that for those who opt out of the services of PlayStation Plus, all online functions will be closed.

Speaking on the need of a PS Plus membership to play MMORPGs, he said, “You will need it to enjoy online multiplayer. This will also depend on the judgement by the publishers, and there will be some free to play titles that you’ll be able to play without needing a PS Plus subscription, like PlanetSide 2 and DC Universe Online.”

Sony confirmed to Polygon today, the two free-to-play MMOs ‘DC Universe Online’ and ‘PlanetSide 2’ will not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play them.

Creative Director of DC Universe Online Jens Anderson was interviewed during E3 where he said, “We are a free-to-play game; you do not have to pay for PlayStation Plus to play [DC Universe Online].”

November 2011 was when DC Universe came to be a free-to-play title and the company recently announced that they made it possible to where PS3 and PS4 owners share servers, so friends can still play together regardless of their consoles.  The plans will be the same for PlanetSide 2 players as well, and both of those games will definitely be available this year.

Developers are making it possible for the PS4 to use a keyboard and mouse on the PlanetSide 2 game. Sony is figuring out ways to transfer leveled up characters from the PC to the PS4, due to the content being the same.

Sony Computer Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida states, “As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it’s a publisher’s decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements.”

Blacklight: Retribution and Warframe are two other free-to-play titles that will not require PlayStation Plus for the PS4 to play.

Not buying PlayStation Plus will not disable the console, if the user wishes to play games that are offline; it will work along with all the media services on the console.

Any current PlayStation Plus membership will be transferable to the PS4 and users can have the membership on all their devices PS3, PS4, and PS Vita.

PlayStation Plus members on the PS4 will immediately get the Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition game during the first year. Sony has also confirmed that the members will be getting a free game every month, and a couple of those upcoming titles are Don’t Starve, Outlast, and Secret Ponchos.

Even though many players dread paying to play online, PlayStation Plus actually has some great benefits involved. During the E3 conference it is shown that PlayStation Plus has, “discounted games, cloud saves, automatic game updates, early access to beta programs, instant game collection, and immersive multiplayer online on PS4.” All for less than $5/month.

The current price for PlayStation Plus membership on the PlayStation Store and PlayStation.com is $17.99 for 3 months, or $49.99 for a year. We are not sure if the prices are subject to change when the PS4 comes around.
