David Goldfarb spoke with Polygon where he stated that he is leaving Overkill Software in good terms. PayDay 2 sold wonderfully and David admits that the game wasn’t a AAA title but it sold as well as any AAA video game.

David Goldfarb isn’t a stranger to big successful video game hits. Through the years, David has worked on video games that includes Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield 3 and Killzone 2. Now it’s time to take a step back and work with a little more freedom.

Currently, David is looking to open up his own studio where he can have creative control. Only about four developers will be present within the studio and it’s unknown what the first IP will be.

I never wanna really do that again, big teams. And there are a lot of reasons for that. Even when I was doing it it felt f***ing fraudulent,” he said. “And there are people who are totally valid in that context but if you’re a journalist or a game designer who thinks the thing that matters the most to you is you need freedom, and I think I’m one of those people, then eventually the world will decide or you will decide, there is no other thing. It will happen one way or another.

“One can advocate that even though Battlefield 3 was a gigantic success for us, I would say we may have looked a little bit too much at our competitor.”, he said.

“And we’ve been criticized for that, especially on the single-player side. But when we started doing Battlefield 4, we said we were going to make the game we think is the right game for us and the consumers. Again, you can’t be arrogant about it. You have to be a little paranoid about what others are doing, but staying true to what you’re doing is the key.”

He also said that the console transition is putting much pressure on the developers. Earlier, the PS2 and PS3 era were simply about high-def gaming and gamers were happy simply by enjoying their favorite games in high-def. But the next gen consoles demand more. High-def graphics go without saying. It is what is done outside of the graphics make a difference and prove to be a challenge.

According to him, gamers now want  “a deep, engaging single-player campaign”, “multiplayer with seven to ten game modes”, “a huge variety of locations” as well as “some kind of service to support the game post-launch that is not ripping consumers off but actually adds value”.

• On social – companies EA bought weren’t as successful as they hoped, but were not a failure. “PvZ and Bejeweled will continue to come to all platforms.”
• While talking about social – “[But] we’ve seen the benefits of creating games like Battlefield and FIFA“
• BF3 DLC brought in $150 million
• On microtransactions: “We’re building into all our games the ability to pay for more, to unlock faster… trucks, levels, etc. microtransactions. Consumers love that.”

“Our Battlefield 3 console server migration will start at this time,” developer DICE wrote in the blog post. “Online gameplay will not be available on consoles during this operation. We will message once servers are starting to spin back up.”

The post also included specific information for anyone using the server rental service in the “South U.S. region”:

“For the large majority of players renting a Battlefield 3 server, our server migration is a completely transparent operation except for the planned maintenance. If you are currently renting a console server in the ‘South U.S.’ region, the following applies:

• Your current lease period will run its full course with no change whatsoever.
• After the server migration you will not be able to extend your current lease or start a new lease in the ‘South U.S.’ region – we recommend that you use the ‘East U.S.’ or ‘West U.S.’ region instead.”

From that it seems the premium server rental service has not been as lucrative as expected and the initiative is being consolidated a bit.
